Yahoo and MSN, sitting in a tree…

The rumor that won’t die is back again; Yahoo and MSN Search are in the midst of merger discussions. While by my count this if the seventy-third time they’ve discussed the idea, something about this feels a bit different. Perhaps it’s the fact that at this point, even the most delusional Yahoo or Microsoft employee can’t expect to knock Google off its perch.

If such a merger does happen, the big winner will be Google, with Ask potentially gaining a small benefit. I believe that the combined entity would likely lose marketshare, with most going to Google. Those that truly wish for an alternative to Google, however, might just give Ask a look.

That would be a miserable marriage that Google would love to watch. Two giants trying to somehow imitate the real giant are not going to make it.
Ask are trying a different approach, and I would like to see how they develop over time.

I agree with Elias. Microsoft will get around 30% of search market share by buying yahoo. But I believe that it will also drop and will be big loss for Microsoft.
