No, no matter what your SEO firm might be telling you, meta tags are not used in ranking calculations in the major search engines.

However, Abakus is reporting that Google is now using Meta Description as the text returned on the Search Engine Results Page. This is correct, but he’s not right that this has just happened in the last few days.

We noticed this for a client in the packaged software space last November. We then had the client update their Meta Description tags, and within days Google was returning attractive, customer friendly text on their keyword searches.
