AP on Google AdWords (Virginia Tech shooting)

The Associated Press has an article on Google AdWords related to the Virginia Tech shooting, and they reveal how little they know about how AdWords works. In the article, they say:

“The New York Times and The Washington Post, for example, bought keyword ads that put their coverage into the prominent ‘’sponsored links” atop the Google results page. So did The First Post, a British online news magazine. The Times, CNN and Fox News got similar links up on Yahoo; Fox News also mined MSN.”

As anyone who actually managed an AdWords account knows, there is no way to “put” your ads on the top of the Google page. Google automatically places standard AdWords there if they are performing to certain unpublished specs.
